I’d been wanting to cross this one off the list, but also to improve on last year’s epic — three (major) peaks in the Whites can be an average day, but in retrospect, Cannon truly deserves its own day. Soon you will reach North Kinsman. The bio says “dog friendly”, but I highly do not recommend bringing your dog. A great loop for any peak-baggers trying to tackle a strenuous day of three. The hike to lonesome lake was very long and grueling. We finished around 7pm. Hi-Cannon trail is no joke and is straight up full of switchbacks. The view from the lookout on North Kinsman was the highlight of the trip. Last push up Cannon is steep. Lincoln/Lafayette, and a 360 view on South kinsman. Contant up and down and very rocky. I realize you cannot really do anything about mud, roots and rock, it’s just not a ton of fun, especially on the way out when you just want to see the parking lot. For this trip, we climbed Cannon Mountain, The Cannon Balls, and North and South Kinsman before getting hiking out on the Fishin Jimmy Trail past Lonesome Lake and back to Franconia Notch. For those planning a day trip, there are a number of trails that provide access to the North Kinsman summit. The trail climbs up Cannon very steeply for the first mile to mile and a half. Took me over nine hours including rest stops and time at the summits. Coming down Hi Cannon trail was tough in the heat. Took about 3 hours. - took me about 6.5 hours in total (Admittedly, I move fast). Great views East just before North Kinsman. Please consult the park website. It looks like it will take all day to get there, really it only took about 1/2 hour to cover the 1 mile from summit to summit. The whole loop took us just under 7 hours. Kinsman Ridge snuck up on me. I didn't see a single person from Cannon to junction near N Kinsman. The fishing Jimmy was very strap down and much slower then other recents. Overall, it was a great challenging hike with great views. Mount Kinsman and Cannon Mountain It is possible to combine the Kinsmans and Cannon in a long trip. Started at 9am, and went to Cannon first. These were mountains 7-8-9 for me and my first 3 peaks in one day and also seemed to take very long to get down... and after tracking actual mileage it was 16.6 not 11.3. Going down Kinsman Ridge from Cannon, it looked like it would be a worse ascent, but maybe it just seemed like it because I could see more of the trail looking down. Then I went up and down all four cannonballs. The only downside was when we came down the lonesome lake trail back to the car the trail was packed with people. The 0.4 mi along the ridge to the north summit was no joke! For someone in good "mountain shape" this is a good day with lots to look at. Made it to the Kinsman Pond tentsites by noon on a Saturday, completely full, dropped a bed roll in the shelter and hiked North and South Kinsman. Continue the trail to South Kinsman. South Kinsman. One of these peaks, North East Cannon Ball qualifies as one of “New Englands 100 Highest” peaks. Sometimes, hiking means the view is inward, not outward. Benchmark that was fairly far removed from the summit of North Kinsman. Kinsman Ridge Trail traverses two of these peaks and weaves around the middle one.
